It seems to be a couples' night (which is every night when you walk into a bar alone). Do I stand and ogle at them or look to the AARP member winking his one good eye at me? Do I just sit and get really drunk till I go home with whichever guy has the least belly fat?
I had the pleasure of attending Nic Rad's PeopleMatter show at RARE gallery in Chelsea. Nic is a Brooklyn-based artist and admitted media addict hosting his second solo show at RARE. Rad is showcasing his 18-month long project PeopleMatter, a collection of 99 painted portraits that capture a moment in the history of communication. Subjects include bloggers, journalists, and Internet "micro-celebrities," selected using various digital tools.
The neon "Bar" sign is turned off, so all it is now is a series of short-circuited fluorescent tubes, waiting to be flicked on and occupied. It won’t be — not for another few hours at least. The streets are cracked and filled with mirrors.
After almost being turned away from Dave and Buster's it dawned on me: All the red state, true-blooded bulging veiny necks, Sarah Palin chanting, altar boy touching, Nascar watching, beer guzzling, babymaking, Playgirl posing PASSION that is the Mid-American manifesto had finally made it’s way to the cultural mecca of the world. New York City is fucked.

We’ve all seen them. In most instances, they are completely unavoidable (and oblivious for that matter). I am talking about “that couple” that finds it necessary to match outfits and plan wardrobes based on, not the weather or current trends, but each other.
When I first heard that the documentary The September Issue would not be released in Montreal until the end of October, I thought: "How preposterous! Doesn’t that defy the laws of fashion? Won’t it be outdated by then?" And, you, dear readers, are probably thinking the same thing.
If you haven't already heard, there is a website by the name of THREADLESS.COM — an online community of artists in which original designs and thoughtful slogans are submitted by the community to be produced as silk-screened graphic tees. This is quite the parallel gold mine for graphic artists with an interest in fashion!
This past September 18th, the young, savvy downtown crowd ventured out for a nouveau boutique's opening reception. Amidst a flurry of DJ beats and excited conversation, invitees and shoppers perused the racks of clothing, jewelry, and a motley assortment of design objects.
In the fashion industry the word skinny has set an unambiguous standard. Consumers are segregated according to their size and constantly plagued by this standard skinny. It may be that vanity sizing has allowed consumers of average size to feel more at ease, but some consumers have felt its conflicting negative side-effects.
